No, I think people are simply ignorant of the fact that a compact fluorescent is, as its name suggests, is simply a miniature version of the type they've happily been cooking under in the kitchen, worked under at the office, studied under at school, shopped under at the supermarket etc for the last 60 odd years without being poisoned by mercury, fallen down the stairs, chopped their finger off while slicing an onion, broken out in some horrible skin condition...
