When a thread on what a disappointment a camera is blows it's limit with many people whining about a new camera it is bound to be a success. With all the nit-picking everyone misses the big picture that Canon have produced a camera not a lot larger than the ever popular G series but with a lovely big sensor. Fuji seem to be suffering badly with the larger version of their complex EXR sensor so the timing is good. KISS seems still the best design concept.

Provided there are no nasty suprises I do not see how it can fail. I could imagine many people using this as their sole camera. If the high ISO performance is good from this big sensor it will offset the slowish long focal length. It does seem potentially to be an unbeatable all rounder.

Can't wait to get mine. I'll likely keep it on the wide end/2.8 99% of the time and use my DSLR when I need a telephoto.
Travel perfection has been found.
Plus, it looks cool; as an added bonus.

While I hesitate to put my toe in the water of what's been a very emotional overall discussion of this camera, for those that are interested thought I'd mention some things that interested me re: the G1X from the official website, pertaining to low light performance. I haven't heard it referenced anywhere...

First, I like the Handheld Night mode. From what I've read on the NEX forum, this mode (called HandHeld Twilight for SONY) seems to have worked out well.

Also, Canon says they have an Intelligent Image Stabilization system, which changes IS modes according to shooting parameters - one thing it will do is turn IS off if it detects the camera is on a tripod. My overall knowledge of camera systems isn't good enough to know if this is something new, but it sounds like a neat feature.

However, what really caught my eye was this statement under their description of the Optical Image Stabilizer - "For photos, it enables shooting at slower shutter speeds, accommodating more low-light shooting situations of up to 4 stops without having to boost ISO sensitivity." Would be curious to know what those of you with more experience think of this.

(It also has an electronic level, which I will personally find extremely helpful!)

I can understand why many people are disappointed in this camera, particularly at this price. For my purposes (interested enough to appreciate the sensor size, like the manual controls, not interested at present in doing much with my Nikon SLR) it has terrific (if expensive) appeal, more so than other systems I've been watching, and I really hope the IQ and performance are there.
