Flash Head Power for White Backdrop...
Jan 10, 2012

Dear all,

Just a quick question re White Background Lighting...

I've been working with a three light setup for low key portraits (black or grey backgrounds) and want to do more High-key work... Therefore I'm looking at buying a pair of lights purely for lighting a white background (stereotypical 9x18ft white fabric backdrop). My question to you is, would two 200 (Ws/Joules) lights be sufficient (fired into umbrellas) or should I look at something with a little more juice (aka am I in cloud cookoo land)? More precisely, I've currently got 3x Elinchrom BXRi 500 Flash Heads (500 Ws/Joules) and am looking to purchase 2x Elinchrom D-Lite it 2 Heads (200 Ws/Joules). However, The D-Lite it 4 Heads (400 Ws/Joules) are also an option (although I'd rather the 200's if they are suitable).

All your help and advice is much appreciated.

Kind Rgds,

Nick
