Turn off AF illuminator for better AF performance (5n)...
Jan 9, 2012

Saw something about this in another thread (apologies to whoever posted it first), but haven't been able to find that thread again.

Someone suggested turning off the AF illuminator on the 5n to avoid the dotted green box "af confirm" that results in missed focus. Just tried it on my 5n, in dim light, and without the AF illuminator, the camera nailed focus every time (seemed quicker too).

I also keep Direct Manual Focus on (DMF) with peaking, so you get "extra" confirmation of focus before you take the shot - obviously, this isn't necessary, but is a nice bonus in my book.

There may be some situations where the AF illuminator is needed, but I plan to leave it off for default from now on.
