I agree with you, but I did ask for "any advice"--and this discussion shows me what layers, masks, and other tools can do for a picture… and how much I have to learn.

This kind of ties into the ongoing "Is photoshop necessary?" thread ( http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/readflat.asp?forum=1006&thread=40252584 ). I've known that iPhoto, Picasa, and other "easy" and free tools are limited. Nothing gets me interested like showing what's possible.

As I stick more than my toe into this water, I'll play around with the Gimp, plus I have CS5 at work. I will browse through some books on Photoshop Elements and see whether they (and PSE) offer enough flexibility or whether I need to go all the way to CS5. I'll probably need a hardware upgrade, too.
