I own both and the 28-300 is a very good lens for use when traveling and casual shooting but it is nowhere near as sharp as the 70-200mm lens for most purposes. The 28-300 is a f5.6 lens and that limits shutter speeds and VR is only useful when the subject is not moving and the photographer is not in motion either.

I would sooner sell the 70-200 f2.8 and replace it with a 80-200mm f2.8 and live without the VR as opposed to having f5.6 as my largest aperture. Think about it - needing ISO 3200 instead of ISO 800 in the same lighting conditions as that is the net effect of the much slower 28-300mm lens.

Downgrading your lenses to upgrade your camera is not going to improve the quality of your images and in the long run you will be spending more money when you realize you need to go back and get new new lenses.
