Is it possible to disable 'Faces' in iPhoto?

Got a new MacBook Pro. Just transferred approx 33,000 digital photos onto the hard drive. I thought the import into iPhoto took a long time, but now that the import is done, the 'Faces" feature keeps going and going and going.... Ughh! Can you turn off Faces in iPhoto? Please tell me there is a way to do this.
