K-5 & Sigma EF-610 DG Super

Simple question from a simple person.

I just got the EF-610 and, for the life of me, am stuck by something that must be simple. After attaching the flash and turning it on, it fires in all circumstances, whether needed or not, and I'm left with overexposed pictures all the time. Is there no way that the camera can tell the flash unit, hey, I need this much extra light, set yourself to 1/64 and fire away? it just seems to have one automatic setting... Overexposed. Am I expecting too much from this unit?

Thanks for any help to this clueless noob to flashes. Crawling back to landscapes...
