I had 2 copies of the 80-200 2.8 non VR. Both were very unsharp at over 150mm and almost unusable at 200mm (even at 5.6). I used on a D700 and a D90. After a month of frustration I sold the lens and bought a 105DC.

I have recently bought a Tamron 70-200 2.8. Despite the reviews about slow focus I don't see any problem. Optically it beats the Nikkor hands down. At 200mm at F4 it is pin sharp and still very usable at F2.8.

Not great resale value but if it fits your needs. I doubt I would need fast focus for portraits.
