Suggest good articles/books/websites to start at the basics.. ...with a twist

I've been shooting in home studio for a number of years and have a firm grasp of the various topics/techniques/fundamentals. However, I have an old College buddy who is interested in dipping a tow in the off camera flash pool, specifically to improve his ability to shoot his children in a studio setting. However he lives quite a ways away and email is really the main method of communication between us.

That said, does anyone have some good suggestions for background information that I can reference, and augment with direct dicussion?

I'm not looking so much for a complete volume on the whole topic of photography so much as short, concise articles that do a good job in discribing individual parts of lighting (and the releation between aperture/shutterspeed/ISO/light level too for that matter.)

Basically, small step by step bits of information that will help convey topics one by one.
