Well, I've done some reading
http://www.rondayphotography.com/Interpreting%20Histograms.htm

and definitely feel that the pictures are underexposed. Here are a couple of shots.

The pictures were taken with default camera settings in smallest S3 jpg format (unedited) with 18-200 mm IS lens at 18 mm (you can view shooting information and histogram data in Canon software ZoombrowserEX). The following sequence notes are provided for reference:
Shot #:

1 -Taken with built in flash in full auto no compensation setting for flash possible in the menu.

2 -Taken with built in flash in P mode without exposure compensation in flash settings menu.

3 -Taken with built in flash in Tv mode without exposure compensation in flash settings menu.

4 -Taken with built in flash in P mode with +2/3 exposure compensation in flash settings menu.

5 -Taken with built in flash in Tv mode with +2/3 exposure compensation in flash settings menu.

All of the above taken in dining room with close table edge 3m and far edge 5.5m from the camera

6 -Taken with built in flash in full auto no compensation setting for flash possible in the menu.

7 -Taken with built in flash in P mode without exposure compensation in flash settings menu.

8 -Taken with built in flash in Tv mode without exposure compensation in flash settings menu.

9 -Taken with built in flash in P mode with +2/3 exposure compensation in flash settings menu.

10 -Taken with built in flash in Tv mode with +2/3 exposure compensation in flash settings menu.
All taken in Living room with corner of the two walls about 4 m from the camera.

Now with 320EX falsh in camera mount shoe positioned straight on at the subject (no bounce):

11 -Taken with 320EX in full auto no compensation setting for flash possible in the menu.

12 -Taken with320EX in P mode without exposure compensation in flash settings menu.

13 -Taken with 320EX in Tv mode without exposure compensation in flash settings menu.

14 -Taken with 320EX in P mode with +2/3 exposure compensation in flash settings menu.

15 -Taken with 320EX in Tv mode with +2/3 exposure compensation in flash settings menu.
Basically very consistent same results as with built in flash!

Two extra shots 16 and 17 are with 320EX set at 60 degree bounce position

16 -60 degree bounce from white ceiling directly straight with no exposure compensation

17 -60 degree bounce from white ceiling directly straight with +2/3 exposure compensation

Also two shots with Sony DSC H20 point and shoot (DSC01 and DSC02) of respective subjects for reference purposes. Of course due to different lens the framing is not as wide. I consider most hand held point and shoot cameras to overexpose slightly but you can compare the brightness histograms more objectively:

Let me know what you think.
