This was in response to the op's statement

but who wants to be that meticulous when their doing family snapshots?

I'm not advocating face detection use (and I forgot about it being available in my initial response when I was saying using a 50 at 1.8 casually may lead to worse photos due to msifocused narrow dof shots) but if you're going to full auto it anyways, it actually may work ok with face detect.
