Elph 310 HS on/off button not recessed

I was surprised to find a design flaw with the on/off button on my new 310 HS: it's bigger than ever and not recessed at all. I find myself pressing it accidentally when I pick up the camera or put it away. I'm afraid I'm going to damage the lens by having it extend inadvertently. Every previous Canon Elph has this button recessed at least a little. What idiot screwed this up??

In an annoying contrast, the Auto/Program slide switch (now moved to the side of the camera) is flush with the surface, and really difficult to move.
