Ultimately, I just wanted a 'Swiss Army Knife' of a camera in the P&S super-zoom range - and the BSI and 800mm equiv. lens pressed the right buttons.
My workhorse camera will always be my D5000 (or whichever DSLR I upgrade to in the future), but it's nice to have something that can do a lot more things without lugging around 20 pounds of glass.
Like I said previously to another responder, the video on the P500 is rather dazzling - rich and vibrant, and even can catch some wonderful lens flare at steep sun angles.
If do hold onto the P500, it will be for video use... and the rare long distance shot in daylight (and even then, will have to PP the hell out the image).
