Does Olympus need to introduce a semi-pro lens if the rumored new camera is real?
Jan 2, 2012

So Olympus is working on a camera that is supposed to have an integrated viewfinder that is supposed to be special, it's also supposed to be weather sealed. This camera is supposed to be announced "soon". This isn't from the rumor mill, this is from Olympus themselves, information they released about 2 weeks ago.

Actually let me take that back, the weather sealing may be part of the rumor mill, I don't think that was mentioned in the interview.

Anyways, let's say Olympus does release this new camera with a fantastic viewfinder in an OM style body that is weather sealed. This is a semi-pro/enthusiast grade camera. The rumor is that the new weather sealed 12-50mm F3.5-6.3 lens is going to be the "kit" lens.

As a kit lens it is fine, but can Olympus really be successful in releasing a camera like that with just a kit lens? The Nex-7 as stirred up a great deal of demand despite just having one high quality lens. Can Olympus do the same? Sony does have a G zoom that is going to be launched this year.

Does Olympus need to release a roadmap that includes a high quality zoom lens? Or will m43rd users be happy to use Panasonic's new fast zooms?

Lastly, if this rumored camera is released in an OM style body and the camera has a dual CDAF/PDAF focusing system, will a camera body the size of an OM be suitable for 43rd's lenses?

Sony Alpha NEX-7
