Haze - Polarizer and Infrared
Jan 1, 2012
|
For Christmas I converted my G1 body to infrared with a 720nm filter. I happened upon a distant vista in the past few days that was tailor made for demonstrating how well infrared is at shooting through haze and comparing with a polarizer as well. The sun was nearly at a 90 degree angle (to the right of the camera) which means about the maximum possible haze filtering effect for the polarizer.
These are crops from a larger image, notice the difference in detail and contrast in the distant mountains.
Standard processing in LR, the only alteration is in the IR shot a spot WB is set to keep it mostly neutral. No changes in contrast or clarity between the shots. All shot with the 45/1.8.
GH2 no filter
GH2 with polarizer
IR Converted G1
I did not shoot the IR G1 with a polarizer as most all photographic polarizers have no effect in the IR.
Finally, here is the full frame of the IR shot with post processing (contrast, curves, clarity and a gradient adjustment for the sky and background).
