extraction problem
Dec 28, 2011

I know this must have been beat to death on this forum, but although I'm an oldtimer at DPR, I haven't had much chance to visit this part of it. I'm okay at the basics of PhotoShop, but I'm not at all good at advanced selections - and that's why I'm writing today.

I have a portrait of a dog which I want to select. I've tried a few different techniques, but I always fall back on a simple Lasso and Quick Mask selection, and it's just not good enough. The advanced techniques I've seen on the web all seem to rely on starting with a subject which is set against a plain white (or other homogeneous) background, which is not the case with the image I have in mind.

If anyone's willing to give me a starting push, at least point out which techniques work with this sort of image, it will be a big help.

Below my signature is a very low res version of the image in question -

the URL is http://www.pbase.com/bill_hansen/image/140587719/original

Thanks - Bill Hansen
