You may define photography in many ways but I think photography can be categorized into photography as an art and photography as documentation. The second category does not need explanation but I may say the best example is satellite photographs. I think most people are more interested in the first category. The first category may comprise two entities. One is photographs which tell stories, evoke emotions sometimes sympathy by themselves. The other one is photographs which are beautiful in aesthetic ways for example composition, color etc. These can be portrait, landscape, close-up, macro, birds, wild life, snap shot, anything. These pictures of course may tell stories but I think it is somewhat different from the first entity in that they need legends when they speak.

Let's come back to a mundane world and talk a secular topic which is more appropriate in dpreview, such as 'do we need high pixel counts in FF DSLRs?' The answer may be yes in the second category. But in that case larger format cameras will serve the purpose better and I think there is no other reason except price for high pixel counts FF DSLR. For the first category of photography the answer may not be favorable. I will not say photography as an art does not need resolution but it is evident there are other things which count. A camera which captures acceptable images in a broad range of lighting situations is as necessary as a high resolution camera is. I suspect an affordable large pixel sensor DSLR may not be available in the foreseeable future and I guess D3s/D700 will be legendary cameras. Oh yes they will be much sought-after in secondhand market.
