Problem with the DIY and speedlite/flashes on beauty dishes is that the light comes out incorrectly. Strobes have their bulbs exposed so the light leaves the strobes in all directions while speedlite/flashes are directed forward. To compensate you may want to add a stofen omnibounce to help distribute the light evenly. (or youll end up having more of a hot spot. I had the same problems with a Profoto D1 head and ended up having to use the curved glass dome to correct the problem).
