Kaj E,
"Contrast" adj for Black Point movement on the left of HIST

I have tried this on a "actual" paid shoot. , but only 1 point up on Contrast (you can only move it 2 points total anyway) ...

What's nice about this- is the test is more "real", a lot of shots , and from 6am to 2pm.
And this last shoot is the reason for this post. lol

  • Note: I don't shoot JPG often ... but, if it is News/Event that must go out Fast , well...

Normally I leave the Contrast at 0 ... I do shoot a lot of Women , in the Open Sun. Sports

SO, on this last shoot ... with a Contrast setting of 1 ... there is a pretty consistant Black Point GAP on the Left of about 5 points.

It added contrast , but did not "Spread Out" the Histogram Left to Right ... it "still" left a 5 point GAP on the Left. (we are talking Bright Sun and sometimes backlit)

And I am not sure if "more" contrast on a womens face will be a good thing

Kaj,

The problem is ... when I am ETTR on a JPG to properly expose a FACE when they are partialy Backlit. (no flash).

So, now I am pushing to the right to expose the Face/skin ... but on my JPG there is a GAP on the Black Point side.
It's easily solved in PP. But, I cannot do that.
I want to get it IN-Camera ... via D700 JPG menu adjustment.

But, there is no Black Point JPG adjustment. (just contrast).

Contrast adjustment takes care of black point whith proper exposure. Experiment and see!

When shooting JPGs it's important to get everything right in camera. If you have to reduce the range (black and white point in PP) you will loose tonality and get combing in the histogram.

Forget everything you have learned about ETTR (it is only intended for RAW). Select an appropriate profile in the settings, use auto contrast and experiment until you have it right for your conditions.
