My great thanks for all of your very helpful replies!

I originally asked as some of my photos with the 100mm f2 were a little soft. However It looks as if my 100mm f2 may be back focussing by ca.1 cm which would make close-ups @say 1m & f2 problematic as the DoF is only ca. 1cm. However, I’m going to look into this more thoroughly. (My 5d doesn’t have a micro-focus option – a reason to get the 5dii I ask myself?

I was aware that the ‘focus-lock & recompose’ method can give errors but I had no idea that they could be so great e.g. see:

http://www.mhohner.de/essays/recompose.php
and
http://visual-vacations.com/Photography/focus-recompose_sucks.htm

I’ll do some tests to see how it pans out in practice (as the calculations assume flat planes of focus but in practice they may be slightly curved & so would be lens dependent).

Thanks again!

Phil
