I had the same dilema: Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 (non-VC) vs. Sigma 17-50 f/2.8.

I ended up choosing the Sigma. Main advantages I considered to justify the price difference were OS and silent AF.

I saw some videos of the TAMRON on youtube and found the AF to be a bit noisy and was affraid it could be a problem in some situations where discretion is needed.

I have also found that OS indeed alows you to extend the number of situations where you can make good images, where otherwise you would not be able to take even acceptable quality captures.

OS + f/2.8 (+good high ISO of my D7000) makes me a very happy user of this lens.

Anyhow the TAMRON IQ is also very good according to most reviews available.
