kit lens creating shadows when using flash

I've noticed lately that when I use the kit flash, a shadow is sometimes created when I am using the kit lens. it tends to happen when at wider focal lengths, and when the subject is very close. attached is an example, taken outdoor on a sunny day; notice how the center bottom of the image has a dark area. it can happen indoors as well.
are there any rule of thumbs to prevent this from happening? thanks
