Photos look better on my iPad2

I have a Dell Alienware machine as well as a Dell UltraSharp 3008WFP - 30", which I calabrate monthly with my Spyder 3. For the life of me I simply cannot understand why my photos look so much better on my iPad2 vs this $3000 monitor.
They simply have better blacks, seem sharper and simply look better. I know this is a generic question but what am I doing wrong on my Dell Monitor vs. having an iPad which I have never touched on calibration?
I am really not complaining, because my photos print ok, but look significantly better on the iPad. Thanks in advance.
