Softbox VS Umbrella

Ok guys, time for presents and I've been given the option of iether an umbrella or a soft box to start my portrait adventure. Also suggestions on brands and/or type and size.
What I need to know is your opinion on which would be better suited for portraits?
It's primary use will be used in conjunction with a Canon 580 EXII, and used in house.
