How do you tell if IS is active?

First thing to do is check the switch on the lens. There should be an IS switch near the AF/MF.

If that's on, then look through the viewfinder and half press the shutter. You should notice a bit of a jerk/wobble, then the image will stabilise. I'm not sure if you can hear anything, I've never taken any notice.
