Based on Ricoh's QA track record, don't expect improvements

The following is based on my own experience, as well as that of friends and family members:

  • Capio R1 - Dysfunctional lens cover / lens assembly; faded button labels

  • Caplio G3 - One camera with a faulty CCD, another still works fine (the last time I checked)

  • Caplio R4 - Horizontal banding

  • Caplio R5 - Decentered lens; defective zoom lever

  • Caplio GX8 - Some dust on the sensor (my camera), stuck pixels (a friend's camera)

  • GX200 - Dead front dial

Almost all Ricoh cameras had reliability issues. Most of these owners also had digicams from other brands (I alone have 5) and there are hardly any issues with them. Now, I know it's a small sample size, but what are the odds that it's the users' fault (or bad luck) and not Ricoh's own sub-par reliability?

One thing for sure, if I buy a Ricoh camera again (or Pentax for that matter), I'm buying a 5 year MACK warranty with it. No way I'm betting on the camera's reliability like I did in the past. I've been burnt too many times.

This sorry state of affairs is also verified by customer surveys:

Independent consumer magazine from Belgium, Feb 2011

As reported by Ricoh Talk forum member BG_CX3_DPREVIEW, the survey included 35,000 owners of digital cameras from various brands. "At the bottom Ricoh appeared with a 70/75%, lowest of all, even lower than several brands that produce electronics for supermarkets"

CHOICE Online, Aug 2007

"Most of the brands in the table are very reliable. CASIO and RICOH were the least reliable, with 9% of CASIO and 10% of RICOH cameras breaking down in the 12 months prior to the survey."

Consumer Reports, June 2000

"As the graph at right shows, two brands chalked up somewhat poorer records than most--Ricoh and Vivitar"

It's an ongoing issue. Bad news for Pentax owners hoping that the new owner will care about improving Pentax reliability.

Prog.
