I think :

1. The same explains for the many complements lavished upon the mediocre or even tawdry works that pervade the photography forums on internet.

After all, the majority of the readers are at best enthusiastic amateurs, regardless of the gear they have in hand.

But this is respected. Different people have different aesthetic experiences.

They have the absolute right to like or dislike the works they see & voice their opinions.

2. Somehow the above photo is not among HCB’s “unarguably greatest works.”

Or if we are to pick the majority of his "less popular" works one by one & posted on forums, similar comments could be heard endlessly. “Nice but ……”

But these do not prevent him from being "the greatest photographer of the 20th century".

In the age of digital photography, many photographers would occasionally have the chance to get a similar one if they are hardworking enough.

But we don’t call them masters.

It’s not one single photo - and a few others - that would make a great photographer.

It's the volumes of works accumulated in years revealing his flair, depth, breadth, vision, thoughts & aesthetics level that would justify the title.
