Well, yes. But the reason I considered putting a filter on as protection was for the time when the lens cap is off. You know, sand blowing, fingerprints, wind blowing things that scratch the glass.

With SLR cameras you had a lens cap, too, but always covered the lens with a filter of some sort to give added protection (cheaper to replace a filter than a lens).

This does not seem to be a standard with digital cameras, for some reason or other.
