Many thanks for your advise Le Kilt.

I will use the 85f1.8 this times (and have the 50f1.4 and 24-105f4 in a bag, in case of).

The reason why I avoid flash is because I fear beeing too disturbing (for the kids), getting flat image, bad shadows, having too wait recycling too long and get less visible OOF background (of a Christmass tree for example :-)) while this last element often add nice ahtmosphere to the photos.

A remote flash as you suggest would probably provide great results. I've never done that but it looks promising.

Eventualy what do you think about having a flash on the camera, set to fire at -1 EV in Av mode (with a soft diffuser) straight or slightly bounced up, just add a touch of spot light in the kid eyes while keeping dominent the magic of the surrounding Christmass lights...

Thanks again.

I'll add to my other reply that when people are moving around indoors (low light) I find the 50mm f/1.4 good, as it enables you to open up, getting faster shutter speeds and shallow DOF. The 85mm f/1.8 should be great if you're not too close (I have the 85mm f/1.2L II and it's slow focussing and tricky if people are moving about, but the 1.8 is much faster). With the 5D2 and 50mm, you have a bit more scope for cropping if necessary.

You said you didn't want to use flash, but bounced off a ceiling or wall can give great shots, as can be a remote flash. I sometimes sit a flash in a corner bouncing off a wall or ceiling and move around shooting - good fun and results.
