Is it worth buying an expensive lens for an entry level DSLR?

I ask because I recently purchased a 50mm 1.8 prime for my "entry level" camera and the IQ is amazing compared to the kit. Obviously primes generally provide sharper images than zooms but that's not what's puzzling me.

Not that I'm going to, but if I was to purchase a $1,500+ lens, I'm assuming the IQ would be of a very high quality. So what is the better combination for best IQ:

Expensive camera with cheap lens?
or
Cheap camera with expensive lens?
