Canon 100mm f2.8 macro - unusable wide open
Dec 9, 2011

I must have a problem with my Canon 100m f2.8 lens as it's totally unusable wide open. I don't think this is normal for this lens? Here's a test against Canon 70-200 f2.8 L IS shot with 30D, tripod, mirror lockup, timer, ISO400. First example is an uncropped, downsized by 25% shot. The 2nd example is a series of shots at different apertures, cropped and downsized by 50%. Everything saved as jpg compression 8 in PS CS5. You don't even need to zoom in on pictures to see what I'm talking about. Even at f32 it appears sharper than at f2.8. f4 is better and I could say acceptable, and by f5.6 is really good. This means I can only use it at f4 or smaller, which makes it useless as a portrait lens, and even for some macro. I had it for 3 years, and at first thought it's my sharpest lens, but then something happened and I started noticing how soft it is wide open. Now I finally decided to do a controlled test (I usually don't) to prove what I was seeing wasn't just my imagination.

Does anyone have an idea how much it would cost for Canon to fix it? Or should I simply try to sell it and upgrade to the L version?
