What's the cheapest path to 1:1 Macro for me?
Dec 9, 2011

Hi all.

I have a Micro-Nikkor 105mm f/4 AI-S (Manual Focus) macro lens.

Until I owned this lens, I thought macro lenses were "silly" since any other lens can take pictures pretty close. But I was wrong! At close-range distances with strong lighting and high contrast subjects, this lens makes other lenses look like toys !!!

Anyway... I'm only able to get about 1:4 reproduction ratio. This lens is worth about $200. What is the best upgrade path for me to get to a 1:1 reproduction ratio?

The 200mm f/4 Micro-Nikkor is the easy answer but I'm hoping for something cheaper...

I'm thinking a PN-11 is a good option as it does not add any glass/air interfaces like those magnifying filters? But a PN-11 costs $250. Can I go even cheaper by selling the 105 f/4 and getting some other Manual Focus lens in the $200-$400 range?

Thanks
