Buy a Flash or 50mm 1.8 instead

I Need to decide if a flash or a 50mm 1.8 lens would suit me better for indoor photography with the a55. What brought me to this is that I have been asked to shot a Christmas party and I only have the kit lens and the camera flash. I bought a flash at my local camera shop to have it quit on me before I could test it out. (will be returning it today) So I was thinking instead of a heavy flash to add to the camera why not the light 50mm prime to my bag. I'm wanting more lenses anyway and at $125 with rebate it cost the same as the flash I bought. What do you all think?

I mainly shot family indoors but I love the outdoors. It is winter here and
Only bought this camera a few months ago. Thx for the help!
