What would be your #1 tip for shooting portrait photography?

I have been asked to shot a Christmas party as people come through a sort and a few candids during the party. I am an amateur when it comes to shooting people. I have the Sony a55 with kit lens 18-55 and a tripod or monopod but that's it. Plz help! Going shopping tomorrow.
