Why is my bokeh not symmetrical?
Dec 2, 2011

Hello,

I purchased a Canon 100mm 2.8 macro lens, and have been experimenting with bluury out-of-focus backgrounds. I notice that the bokeh is a strange shape. I was expecting the out-of-focus dots to be circular/hexagonal or whatever shape but at least of an even/symmetrical nature.

The bokeh that I seem to be getting is un-even in appearance. See below. Is this normal? Is it just the way I am using the camera or is it an artefact of the lens design. I'm not saying I dislike it, just that it wasn't what I was expecting!

Thanks for any advice you can provide
