A77 ISO 'victims'
Nov 30, 2011

So many victims. So few photographers.

That's the impression you get when you see the usual band of A77 whiners who claim that somehow, some way, Sony owes them improvements to the A77 in the area of ISO noise.

Michael Reichmann was really onto something when he commented that the 'noise' over ISO noise has approached the nonsense fever pitch level.

The irony of this is that experienced/methodical photographers don't care about such things. They take whatever steps are needed to get the images they need from whatever tools they use. The 'gearheads' need to measurebate endlessly about these things because they feel that the gear is what makes good photos when nothing could be further from the truth.

I would not be surprised at all if most people in this camp would do better with a few courses on exposure and composition than they would with a 'clean high ISO camera'. NO ONE is going to notice ISO noise in a crappy photo that's poorly composed and boring. And they certainly aren't going to care to view your crappy photo at the pixel level.

Pixel peeping a 24mp file and worrying about noise at 100%? Are you f'ing kidding me?

And yet, even people who own this camera hoping that Sony would bake some secret sauce into it through firmware at a later date are whining. Not everyone of course, and I don't mean to paint everyone with this brush. There are some people here with their heads screwed on properly who see this tool for what it is - an amazing camera with incredible abilities if you know how to use it.

So for those of you who own the A77 (and those who hurl your rotten eggs from the sidelines), please get this straight:

  • Noise characteristics on this camera are unlikely to change dramatically through firmware updates. The best you can hope for is a NR OFF option. So if this doesn't work for you and you own the camera, SELL IT NOW.

  • Pixel peeping at 100% on a 24mp file is for gearheads. If that's what you are, whine on and continue to hope that technology will somehow bring your photography out of it's mediocre state.

Bottom line: if you can't make a great camera like the A77 work for you, then you seriously need to consider another hobby. It's not a perfect camera, but it's easily one of the best currently available in it's class.
