Sigma 18-200mm DC HSM OS II samples and observations.....
Nov 30, 2011

Just got this lens for $399. This is my first DC lens. I own many Canon Ls and Sigma EX (or former EX) so I can compare my findings.

The lens is really small, almost like a toy but feels like a good build and quality.

It has lock switch but in my opinion it is a total waste (unless Sigma knows something is going to happen in the future) because lens does not extend while pointing down. It does not extend even if shaken.
Zoom is very smooth and tight without any jerkiness.

Picture quality is pretty good. Not as good as top lenses like 70-200mm OS but pretty good. Good colors too. HSM is quick. Focus locks in very quick too.

Now for the bad: I can get 2 stop OS but that is about it. So on 7D at 200mm (320mm with crop) I can get 1/80 maybe max reliably if I wait 1/2 second to let OS to settle.
Sometimes, maybe 1/30-1/40 might give decent results but not reliably.

OS seems working because I can see it in the viewfinder and it is steady but I think the lens is so small and light that I push the camera while triggering shutter and it causes camera shake. I might eventually get T3i if I find it on huge sale but I will test it first with this lens. I can easily get 4 stops OS with 70-200mm OS.
Samples below converted from RAW without processing and no sharpening added.

I use a non OEM battery in my $20,000 car so why not in my $2,000 camera.

The only time a smaller sensor with the same pixel count is superior to a larger sensor (aka higher pixel density) is when you are focal-length limited.
