S100 vs 300HS for low-light P&S.
Nov 30, 2011

I have an SD800 for P&S and a 5D mkII for more serious shooting. I am a huge fan of shooting with available light in all cases. In the past I have always gone to my 5D mkII w/50mm with a fast lens when I knew I was going to be doing a lot of low light no-flash shooting. I just used a co-workers new 300HS and was astounded at how well the camera shot inside our dimly lit office with no flash. Even in auto mode the camera was choosing not to use the flash! I had to point it into a dark corner under my desk to even get it to "automatically" decide to use the flash.

Given the apparent improvements in the current crop of P&S's over my SD800 it seems like a pretty good time to upgrade.

I would like to stay cannon, and have the widest possible zoom- so I am looking at the 300HS or the S100.

The S100 seems to have a larger sensor (better for low-light), but the 300HS seem to be a back side illuminated CMOS vs regular CMOS on the S100. Frankly I was quite surprised by how well (low noise) the 300HS seemed to be in low light without a flash- is the S100 much better?
