Thanks very much...it really clears the mind and helps in making the decision.

I shall have the opportunity tomorrow to inspect both the lenses personally. As the fungus is on the 7th element, I think it's on the VR element and I know it makes the matter worse. In our state, fungus is a common problem and we generally take good care of our lenses to save from very high humidity level mainly during the rainy season. Still, if there is some fungus generally it does not degrade the IQ and the Nikon Service here advises to put the lens in Direct Sunlight for some time and then to store it inside a air tight compartment (like tupperware jars) to arrest the growth and that generally increases the life of the lens many folds.

One more worry for me is, if I buy this lens, I need to sell of my 70-300VRII, as this will not serve any purpose anymore....

Having a 600mm reach with my D90 and with acceptable IQ is really very tempting....
