Not really an end point per se, but rather a process of diminishing returns. Doubling the resolution of the sensor will always result in a better image, but doubling each successive time will result in a smaller and smaller improvement in the final image (given the same lens). Eventually it makes more sense economically to live with the current resolution, or upgrade the lens.
