Appropriate settings

I may sound newbie in the best case.
Besides the many vast digital photography range of settings, one might consider for each case, are there better/suitable "appropriate settings" for a X10?, and in what case.
Meaning, is it possible to build a table? in order to establish the best way/ Mode (EXR/DR/whatever etc. ) to shoot WHAT, WHEN, ... ?
I've noticed many comments recommending specific modes for specific situations.
