The G12 is a very competent offering and if it has the size and features you want (chunkier compact with lots of controls, articulated LCD, OVF, and hotshoe), it's tough to beat.
The segment is more and more competitive over time though, with serious entries from Canon, Panasonic, Olympus, Nikon, and now Fuji. And of course (at slightly more size, weight, and cost), the mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras from a number of manufacturers.
That said, the X10 looks extremely promising, perhaps dominating the enthusiast compact segment if Fuji can just resolve the specular highlight issue addressed in many of the threads.
