Epson 7600 still worth considering?
Nov 28, 2011

Hi All,

This is driving me crazy! When I look at this objectively, a printer this big is totally impractical. I never order prints this big from a lab, and I don't have much wall space for many 24x30"+ prints. It makes absolutely no sense for me to own a printer of this size. I don't sell prints this large, it's strictly for my own enjoyment.

And yet, I want one badly! It's one of those pure lust (but no sense) type of purchases. Much like owning a pet tiger. Glorious...yet stupid. Damnit! I want a large format printer!

That being said, spending several thousand dollars for a new Epson or Canon is totally out of the question. But I am seeing a fair amount of the old Epson 7600 model on craigslist for around $500. How viable is a printer this old, strictly from a maintenance standpoint? This printer is sneaking up on a decade in age, are they just going to be maintenance nightmares? I know anything 10 years old is a gamle, how reliable are professional printers this old even if well maintained?

Am I stupid for even considering one of these? Reliability is my biggest concern. If I get one my plan is to buy 3rd party pigment inks for it.
