I am skipping generation or two most of the time to get at least 2x speed.

For example i7 920 at 4.2Ghz (overclocked) runs at least 2X faster or more than QX6800 at the same speed of 4.2Ghz overclocked.

So I am skipping SandyBridge and going to IvyBridge next year though most likely it will be significantly harder to get 2X speed over what I have now. Maybe if I achieve higher clock speeds without going to extremes.

I use a non OEM battery in my $20,000 car so why not in my $2,000 camera.

The only time a smaller sensor with the same pixel count is superior to a larger sensor (aka higher pixel density) is when you are focal-length limited.
