Help with Sony 70-200 f2.8 - soft wide open?
Nov 25, 2011

I bought the Sony 70-200mm f/2.8 G lens few days back and was super-excited and was expecting some very good photos, but I noticed that most of the photos I took with that lens were very soft. And so I tested it today at various apertures and noticed it to be indeed soft wide open at 200mm. Is this expected of the G lens or is my product faulty?

100% crop images:
200mm f/2.8 1/3200s, ISO100

200mm f/2.8 1/3200s, ISO100

200mm f/2.8 1/3200s, ISO100

Also you can see the chromatic aberration (purple fringing) below:

200mm f/2.8 1/2500s, ISO100

200mm f/7.1 1/400s, ISO100

Another soft image (full size):
200mm f/2.8 1/800s, ISO100

And many times I notice that the focus is wrong - may be some kind of back focus issue? Should I just return it and get a new one? If all of them are like this I will just return it and not buy Sony at all, may be buy Sigma lens with optical stabilization. I have a Rokinon 85mm f/1.4 manual focus lens that I got for around 250 bucks and it appears to do a better job at getting sharp images wide open!!
