Disappointing V1 writing speed test
Nov 23, 2011

I have tested two of my SD cards in my V1.

Card: Sandisk Extreme Pro 95MB/s 16GB
RAW:

  1. Took 45 RAW in 8,8s before slow down, finished writing to card in 39,6s., 320.303.703 byte ~ 305,5MB ~ 7,71MB/s

  2. Took 45 RAW in 8,4 s before slow down, finished writing to card in 47,1s., 377.551.822 byte ~ 360,1MB ~ 7,64MB/s

JPG:

  1. Took 62 JPG in 12,1s before slow down, finished writing to card in 38,8s., 254.853.590 byte ~ 243,0MB ~ 6,26MB/s

  2. Took 60 JPG in 11,9s before slow down, finished writing to card in 37,2s., 245.876.017 byte ~ 234,5MB ~ 6,30MB/s

Card: Sandisk Extreme Pro 45MB/s 8GB
RAW:

  1. Took 45 RAW in 8,8s before slow down, finished writing to card in 48,38s., 376.643.401 byte ~ 359,2MB ~ 7,42MB/s

  2. Took 44 RAW in 8,5s before slow down, finished writing to card in 48,93s., 368.736.073 byte ~ 351,7MB ~ 7,19MB/s

JPG:

  1. Took 60 JPG in 11,6s before slow down, finished writing to card in 39,58s., 245.546.639 byte ~ 234,2MB ~ 5,92MB/s

  2. Took 60 JPG in 11,4s before slow down, finished writing to card in 39,64s., 246.490.392 byte ~ 235,1MB ~ 5,93MB/s

So you only gain very little using 95MB/s instead of 45MB/s SD cards, of course you can read faster at your computer if it's supported. Really disappointing results for the V1. Nikon have probably used a slow memory controller for the writing to card operation. We could hope for an improvement through a firmware update, but I doubt Nikon will/can do it.

It should be noted that the V1 is only locked 1-2 seconds after you release the shutter button after the first series of 45/60 pictures is taken, and can take at full speed again until the buffer is filled again. Also the buffer size is excellent.

As a comparison my D300 writes 30,3MB/s (RAW) and 27,2MB/s (JPG) with Sandisk Extreme Ducati CF cards which is a 45MB/s card AFAIK.
