I'm on my third one, and it too seems to have problems.

The SDM failed once, but the bigger problem has been optical misalignment. If you buy one, do a brick wall test at 50 mm. and F2.8.

Ouch. Some time ago, I looked over reports on short zooms, including the 16-50mm Pentax. Instead, though, I decided to take a chance on the Tamron 17-50mm, at about $400 (at that time). It is on my K20D about 70% of the time, is the sharpest lens I have ever owned, and in at least 18 months of use, has not had any kind of glitch. IMO, it beats the daylights out of a $1000 (or more) lens that appears to be supremely prone to failure and less sharp than my low cost Tamron.

The shot attached is a set-up shot to check exposure, etc., not intended for re-use, but does give an indication of the sharpness and color quality of the Tamron 17-50 on a Pentax K20D.
