Smaller filters on M. Zuiko 40-150mm?
Nov 22, 2011

I am looking into buying some filters, which as other ยต4/3 user before I have discovered be difficult due to vast variation between thread sizes on the objectives. To make a long story short, I currently have two objectives with 37mm thread, one with 46mm thread, and one with 58mm thread. I may well buy one with 52mm thread in a not so distant future. Finally I have some old manual focus objectives with 55mm thread. The big problem is thus which size(s) of filters to buy.

The only objective with 58mm thread that I own (or plan to own) is the M. Zuiko 40-150mm. I understand that conventional wisdom would be that I should thus bye 58mm filters. But looking at the objective, it seems like the filter is bigger than it need be; the front element is considerably smaller than the filter thread. As far as I understand from other discussions, this is probably because Olympus decided to use some of the same parts for the 40-150mm as they use for the 14-150mm, which has a much larger front element.

My question is thus: can one safely, that is without vignetting, use a smaller filter on a step-down ring for the M. Zuiko 40-150mm? Would a 52mm filter work fine? How about a 46mm filter?

I have tried searching the forums, and I the closest I came was that someone (cannot find the post now) was using a 52mm-49mm step-down ring to shade the lens (instead of a hood). If anyone has actual experience with this, I would great appreciate your input.
