Sony 36MP FF sensor in D800 and A99?
Nov 21, 2011

Rumours are firming up for a sony 36MP sensor in the D800, replacing the D700.

Already this has created a tizzy in some attention-seeking bloggers, SAR references carl's panic attack about such high MP. Carl ignores the fact that 36MP FF is the equivalent pixel density to a 16MP APS-C, and claims it is too much for normal consumers when normal consumers will not be buying a $4000 FF body. Sigh. SAR suggests that a sony FF camera with this sensor may appear in the spring, perhaps A99?

With all this hoo-ha it's interesting to see what potential D800 users think of this 'excessive' resolution: they appear to want it!

It seems to me that there is a strong disconnect between real world users and many vocal forum posters / bloggers wrt MP.

Personally I think you should judge each product on it's merits, which depends on the application you have in mind. There is no single answer to the question of how many MP are needed or how high iso needs to go. Drawing a line in the sand for MP is like saying you will never need more than 256MB system memory in a PC.

IQ is not judged exclusively by high iso noise performance
